E. T. A. Hoffmann's 1816 tale, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," unfolds on Christmas Eve as Marie's toy Nutcracker comes to life. After defeating the evil Mouse King, the Nutcracker transports Marie to a magical doll kingdom. Despite recounting her adventures, Marie's parents dismiss them as dreams. Drosselmeyer later reveals the backstory involving Princess Pirlipat's curse, explaining the Nutcracker's appearance. Marie's compassionate vow breaks the curse, transforming the Nutcracker into a human. In the end, he returns to claim Marie as his bride, and they reign in the enchanting doll kingdom. The story, inspiring Tchaikovsky's ballet, blends fantasy and fairy tale elements.

Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (1776–1822) was a German Romantic author, jurist, composer, and artist. A key figure in the Romantic movement, his fantasy and Gothic horror stories influenced 19th-century literature. Hoffmann's novella, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," inspired Tchaikovsky's ballet. He also wrote tales shaping Offenbach's opera and inspiring Schumann's Kreisleriana. Born into a family of jurists in Königsberg, Prussia, Hoffmann's father was a poet and musician. Hoffmann's rich contributions span literature, music, and art, establishing him as a prominent figure in German Romanticism, leaving an enduring impact on various artistic realms.
