Holding a Doctorate in Economics, she was a founding member and Trustee of the Anusandhan Trust and the Centre for Enquiry into Health and Allied Themes (CEHAT). Dr. Patel made significant contributions to Women's Studies and Gender Economics. She co-authored books like Indian Women: Change and Challenge and Reading for Half the Sky, and wrote extensively on gender issues for Economic Times. Formerly a Reader at the Research Centre for Women's Studies at SNDT University, she currently serves as Coordinator at Sophia Centre for Women's Studies and Development, Mumbai.
