"On the Sublime and Beautiful" (1757) is a philosophical pamphlet by Irish statesman Edmund Burke. Building on the works of Aristotle and Hume, Burke distinguishes between beauty and sublimity, exploring them as emotional responses rooted in human perception. This influential treatise shaped Romanticism in Europe, delving into visual art, music, and literature. Burke begins by examining senses' role in individual and societal emotions, asserting the arts' power to shape these emotions. He observes sublime passions, sensory perceptions' effects, discusses beauty, compares both, and explores their natural causes. The treatise concludes with a section on the sublime and beautiful in poetry.

Edmund Burke (1729–1797), an Irish statesman and philosopher, spent most of his career in Great Britain as a Whig Party member of Parliament. Burke emphasized the importance of virtues and religious institutions for societal stability. Notable for his criticism of British policies towards American colonies and support for Catholic emancipation, he staunchly opposed the French Revolution, asserting it threatened traditional institutions. In "Reflections on the Revolution in France" (1790), Burke became a leading figure in the conservative faction of the Whig Party, earning recognition as a philosophical founder of conservatism in the 20th century.
