Oxford Geographies: The Preliminary Geography is an introductory textbook designed to provide young learners with foundational knowledge of geography. It covers basic concepts such as physical features, climate, natural resources, and human settlements. The book emphasizes understanding the environment, maps, and simple geographic terms, fostering early spatial awareness. Its structured approach makes geography accessible and engaging for beginners, supporting gradual learning and curiosity about the world. Widely used in schools, it serves as a stepping stone to more advanced geographic studies by building essential skills and knowledge in a clear, concise format.

Andrew John Herbertson (1865–1915) was a Scottish geographer who made significant academic contributions. Educated at Edinburgh and Oxford, he worked with Patrick Geddes and taught in Dundee, Manchester, and Edinburgh. He earned a PhD from Freiburg and became Oxford’s first Professor of Geography in 1905, later leading the department. A Fellow of major scientific societies, he influenced geography and meteorology. Herbertson died in 1915; his son died in WWI And O. J. R. Howarth (1877–1954) was a prominent geographer and author who significantly influenced geographical literature. His major works—A Commercial Geography of the World (1921), The Mediterranean (1924), and The World About Us (1922, 1926)—addressed economic, regional, and environmental geography. Howarth also explored geography’s ties to history and advanced geographical education, especially school geography. His scholarship played a vital role in shaping early 20th-century geography and its teaching worldwide.
