Kelly’s artwork and observations reflect his deep appreciation of the region, making the book a cherished visual and literary portrayal of Burma's unique charm.

Robert George Talbot Kelly (1861–1934) was an English orientalist painter, author, and illustrator, noted for his evocative depictions of North Africa and Burma. Born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, he initially pursued a career in cotton trading but shifted to painting under his father’s guidance. Inspired by travel, Kelly relocated to Egypt in 1883, where he became fluent in Arabic and painted vibrant landscapes and scenes of Bedouin life, later published in Egypt Painted and Described (1902). He also traveled to Burma, producing influential works that shaped Burmese painting. A watercolorist and member of several art societies, he died in London in 1934.
