The Catechism of Indian Music with Songs by Mohindro Lall Seal (1893) is a concise yet rich primer on Indian classical music, aimed at both learners and practitioners. Structured in a question-and-answer format, it introduces foundational concepts such as swaras (notes), ragas (melodic frameworks), talas (rhythmic cycles), and musical ornamentation. Interspersed are illustrative songs and musical notations that concretely demonstrate theoretical principles. Originating from Calcutta, the handbook sought to systematize and promote Indigenous musical knowledge during the late colonial era, providing one of the earliest English-language guides to Indian music.
Mutty Lall Seal (1792–1854) was a pioneering Indian businessman and philanthropist in colonial Calcutta. Starting as a bottle and cork dealer, he rose to become a powerful shipping magnate and financier, earning the title “Rothschild of Calcutta.” Seal traded extensively in indigo, silk, sugar, and rice, and introduced steamships to local trade. He played key roles in founding the Oriental Life Insurance Company, Bank of India, and Assam Company. A generous philanthropist, Seal funded education, healthcare, and public works, influencing both Indian and European ventures. He is remembered for his integrity, business acumen, and dedication to social welfare and progress.
