The literary evaluations presented are anchored in the belief that classical Sanskrit literature rightfully earns a place among the world's great literary traditions and should, therefore, be held to comparable standards. It's noteworthy that medieval Indian poetry judges adhered to similar standards, evident in their unanimous acclaim of Kalidasa, a poet esteemed equally by Western critics. This revised overview includes minor textual refinements and references to recent scholarly works. This book comprehensively explores various aspects of classical Sanskrit literature, encompassing its historical origins, the literary predecessors who laid the foundation for Kalidasa, the contributions of Kalidasa himself, the post-Kalidasa epoch in epic poetry, the evolution of historical poetry, the emergence of prose romance and campu literature, the prevalence of popular narratives, the didactic fable tradition, the lyrical and gnomic forms of verse, and a range of theories associated with the art of poetry.

Arthur Berriedale Keith (1879-1944) was a Scottish scholar known for his expertise in Sanskrit and constitutional law. He served as Regius Professor of Sanskrit and Comparative Philology at the University of Edinburgh from 1914 to 1944. His career also included roles in the Colonial Office and the Faculty of Advocates. Keith authored numerous books on constitutional law, including "Responsible Government in the Dominions" and "The British Cabinet System," as well as works on Indian culture and literature, such as "The Samkhya System" and "Classical Sanskrit Literature."
