A Catalogue of the Moths of India by E.C. Cotes and Colonel Charles Swinhoe is a detailed reference book cataloging the moth species of India. It provides in-depth descriptions, classifications, and information on the physical characteristics and geographic distribution of various species. This work is a valuable resource for entomologists, highlighting moths’ ecological roles and their economic importance, particularly in agriculture. Published in the late 19th century, it remains a foundational text for the study of Indian moths.
Everard Charles Cotes (1862–1944) was an English entomologist, journalist, and author. He worked at the Indian Museum in Calcutta, contributing significantly to economic entomology and publishing various works on Indian insects. After marrying Canadian writer Sara Jeannette Duncan, he transitioned to journalism, founding the Indian News Agency. Cotes later became a Reuters correspondent. He authored journalistic books, including Signs and Portents in the Far East and Down Under with the Prince, and continued writing after relocating to England.
