About The Translator: Biscoe Hale Wortham (1843–1928) was a British priest and translator known for his work on Sanskrit literature. His career in the church included serving as the vicar of Shepreth, Hertfordshire, from 1874 to 1880, and later as the rector of Eggesford, Devon. He also served as the vicar of St. Margaret’s in Ware and became the rector of Dunton Waylett in 1911. Wortham was married to Malvina (Mina) Browning in 1871, and they had five daughters and three sons. Wortham's contributions to scholarship include translations of several Sanskrit texts, which were published in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society (JRAS). These translations include portions of the Mârkaṇḍeya Purâṇa, the Kathâ Sarit Sâgara, and the Kathāsaritsāgara. Additionally, he translated works such as "The Śatakas of Bhartrihari," "Hitopadeśa, or, The Book of Good Counsel," "The enchanted Parrot," and "The Buddhist Legend of Jīmūtavāhana."
