The book rightly interpreted and intelligently applied, will be found to embody the principles of healthy brain action and the secret of a clear head. A sensation of heat in the head, a burning forehead, a feeling of fullness and throbbingfor the relief of which every known remedy, except the right one, is commonly tried constitutes the premonitory symptom of dullness and confusion, the experience that alarms not less than it embarrasses a worker. From the study of habit the reader will learn to set a true value on such expertness or “cleverness” as may be acquired by practice. He will perceive that it is neither a wise nor a safe policy to trust every-thing to habit; The will must be strong in action and retain its grasp of the business of life directing the mental faculties in their discharge of duty, giving steadiness to the eye acuteness to the ear, precision to the hand, or the mind may be disorganised the mental and actual vision confounded the subjective sense of hearing disassociated from the impressions of sound. Nothing so much tends to mental disquietude as fasle estimates of time. A true measuring of the moments as they pass, a fair retrospect along the track of life and a clear far-sighted sweep of the horizon are essentials of a clear head. The like is true of pleasure. Little or no good work can be accomplished unless the labourer has some measure of enjoyment in his task. Self-importance may range from the extreme.
Joseph Mortimer Granville (1833 –1900) was an English physician, author and inventor known for having first patented the electomechanical vibrator for relief of male muscle aches. Granville qualified M.R.C.S.Eng. in 1856 and L.R.C.P.Lond. in 1861. He attained the higher medical degree M.D. in 1876 from the University of St Andrews. In his earlier years he was much engaged in journalism, and was, we believe, a frequent contributor to the editorial columns of the Lancet. He practised at one time in Bristol, but afterwards settled in London, and gave particular attention to the treatment of gout, upon which he wrote largely. In addition to his famous invention of an electric vibrator, he also invented a sphygmograph and a differential thermometer. In the late 1880s Granville invented the electric vibrator, a handheld electric operated device designed to relieve male muscle aches and pains. Originally called a percusser or more colloquially "Granville's hammer", the machine was manufactured and sold to physicians, many of whom used the equipment to create "hysterical paroxysm" in their patients with female hysteria.
