The Self and its Sheaths by Annie Besant explores the concept of the true Self (Atman) and its various coverings, or "sheaths" (koshas), which obscure its pure nature. According to Besant, these sheaths represent different layers of human existence: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Each sheath corresponds to a different aspect of human experience, with the outermost layers tied to the material world, while the innermost reveal the divine Self. Besant emphasizes that spiritual evolution involves transcending these sheaths to realize one's true, eternal nature, guiding individuals toward self-awareness and enlightenment.

Annie Besant (1847–1933) was a British socialist, theosophist, women's rights advocate, and key supporter of Indian nationalism, serving as the first female president of the Indian National Congress in 1917. Originally an advocate for atheism, she shifted to theosophy after meeting Helena Blavatsky. Besant fought for social reforms, education, and self-rule in India, founding institutions like the Central Hindu School. A prolific writer and orator, her notable works include On the Deity of Jesus of Nazareth (1872) and Christianity (1889). Her advocacy and writings left a lasting impact on social and political movements. Besant's impactful legacy includes over 300 literary works and her role in founding Banaras Hindu University.
