About The Book

Empowerment of women is essential in the process of improving of economic, social and political status of women, the traditionally underprivileged ones, in the society. It is the process of guarding them against all forms of violence. Women empowerment involves the building up of a society, a political environment, wherein women can breathe without the fear of oppression, exploitation, apprehension, discrimination and the general feeling of persecution, which goes with being a woman in a traditionally male dominated structure Women empowerment and gender equality concepts are important in fostering health and human development. Empowerment describes the process of change where an individual with prior inability to choose has the access and freedom to make choices. Empowerment has both intrinsic as well as instrumental value. This book focused on the practices and challenge of the government progrmmes towards women empowerment and explained the effectiveness of the policy advocacy work which focused at empowering the women at grassroots. The research study was conducted at Makuey Woreda, Ethiopia. This book focused on women empowerment through participation in various developmental activities and explained the terms include self-strength, self-control, self-power, selfreliance, personal choice, capability of fighting for one's rights, independence, own decision making power, freedom etc. This book is very useful to those who are working with women at grassroots for empowerment. It provides insights on women issues to promote qualitative services and also helps to develop professional knowledge and skills.

About The Author

Dr. Karanam Viswa Bhushan, Associate professor of social work who has been working in Maharaja's Post graduate college(awarded 'A' Grade by NACC) since two decades (affiliated to Andhra university) Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh. India. He successfully completed the employment contract under Unite Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for two years as Associate Professor in Ethiopian Civil Service University, Ethiopia. During this tenure a lot of research work was done in various social issues. He secured his Bachelor's, Master's (Post Graduation) and Doctoral degrees in social work from Andhra University and awarded first rank with gold medal at post graduation studies. His area of specialization is community development. He secured International certificate in community development and Adult education at Nijmegen University, Netherlands. He has participated in several National and International (Belgium, Sweden, Netherlands, Germany, Thailand, Malaysia and Canada) seminars, conferences and workshops and enriched with the knowledge of social work education. He has zeal of learning and great aptitude towards teaching and research. He has delivered guest lectures in several universities in Canada, Belgium and Germany. His focused areas are capacity building, empowering women groups (SHG'S , DWACRA'S), child education and health, youth development, Awareness building on social issues, community development in urban slums, rural and tribal areas. He has published several books on different social issues. Training programmes to personnel of the Non Governmental organizations and consultant services to Local, National and International organizations. He has good network with the NGO'S and promoted several programmes for the community development. He has Life membership in several National associations of social work education.
