About The Author

Gertrude Eleanore Hollingworth, an MA from London University, was a distinguished scholar and an illustrious teacher. As a fine Shakespearean scholar she edited the great bard's Hamlet and Macbeth and her editions are marked by a remarkable combination of lucidity and profundity. The same critical acumen is also evident in her perceptive treatment of Arnold's poems : Sohrab and Rustam, The Scholar Gipsy and Thyrsis. In literary criticism Hollingworth anticipated the American New Criticism in her focus on the text and explication de texte.
