Bates abandona la lente t�cnica de la narratolog�a para adoptar una postura historiogr�fica y est�tica al estudiar la literatura hisp�nica. El recorrido es fascinante: desde las manifestaciones primigenias de la l�rica y la �pica medieval hasta la sofisticaci�n ret�rica del Barroco.
Es aqu� donde el autor brilla al identificar las "semillas de modernidad" en el periodo precl�sico. Su an�lisis sobre el Barroco no se limita a la acumulaci�n de figuras ret�ricas, sino que lo define como un estado mental: una tensi�n entre el desenga�o y la exuberancia que prefigura muchas de las preocupaciones existenciales tratadas en la primera parte del libro.
