Im Folgenden bildet sich ein gro es Spektrum an öffentlichen Reaktionen auf Trauerfälle aus, das von der Todesmeldung über die Leichenpredigt, das Epicedium und die nekrologische Ekloge bis hin zum Totengespräch reicht. Die unterschiedlichen Spielarten des Nachrufs passen sich immer wieder neuen sozialen, kulturellen, ideologischen und medialen Herausforderungen an. Auch greifen stets die traditionellen, von der Funeralrhetorik vorgegebenen Formen der Verbeugung vor einem Hingeschiedenen und aktuelle Gestaltungsinnovationen ineinander. Dabei ist die Gattung nicht blo ein Forum für das Lob von Verstorbenen, sondern steht durchgängig im Dienste aller erdenklichen theologischen, politischen und ästhetischen Interessen. Die Ansicht, dass der Nachruf in der Regel der Maxime De mortuis nil nisi bene gehorche, erweist sich als Vorurteil. Tatsächlich ist die mittels unterschiedlicher Strategien "zwischen den Zeilen" versteckte Kritik am Toten ein konstitutiver Bestandteil der Texte. Nachrufe auf Schriftsteller schlie lich (alle erhaltenen Nachrufe auf 16 exemplarische Schriftsteller werden in der Studie analysiert) weisen ein besonders hohes Ma an Selbstreflexivität auf und sind signifikante Zeugnisse für die Geschichte von Autorschaftskonzepten.
