The book Higher English Grammar and Composition is based on Modern English Grammar which has its base in descriptive linguistics and describes the structure/system of English language under Sound System, Word System, Syntax, and Punctuation; different from the traditional method of studying grammar which is based on Orthography, Etymology, Syntax, Punctuation, Rhetoric and Prosody. The grammatical terms used in this book are those in current use in modern grammar. To describe the English language more accurately and consistently, authors have made some changes in the terminology of grammar, from traditional grammar, according to the modern uses of grammar. The book contains fifteen chapters and has been divided into two parts. In the first part, all the rules of English grammar have been discussed. Whereas the second part of the book focuses on the use of the English which is basically the practical application of the grammatical rules. It also lays emphasis on vocabulary and use of English language in real life context. To master the language, comprehension, precis, and essay writing have been included in this book. Since this book has been written primarily for students, school and college teachers, the authors have tried to present the modern grammar in the simplest way possible. Every new term has been explained in the text itself. The presentation of the book is good and at the end of each chapter exercises have been provided to practice the rules of grammar. The book will be useful for the those who are interested in English language and want to master it i.e., who want to speak and write the language correctly.

M.P. Sinha, a scholar of repute, was Professor and Head, Department of English, CSJM University Kanpur from 1988 to 2002. His published books include: W.B. Yeats: His Poetry and Politics; Methods of Research in English; Modern Linguistics; and Advanced Learner’s Grammar and Composition. A.K. Awasthi, M.A., L.L.B., Ph.D., was Professor and Head, Department of English, H.S. Gour University, Sagar (MP). He has published a number of papers in national and international journals of repute. Shravan Kumar, Assistant Professor at Raj Kumar Goel Institute of Technology and Management (Ghaziabad), has expertise in Literature, Verbal and Non-verbal Teaching Skills, Linguistics, Phonetics and Personality Development Programs and Faculty Facilitator in leading region/branch in the field of Career Management with twelve years of experience. He is the Managing Editor and Publisher of an online quarterly journal The ELT Practitioner and member of Editorial Board of the JELT, a journal of more than 50 years old. He is also carrying the responsibility of National Joint Secretary of English Language Teachers Association of India (ELTAI). His published books include: Fundamentals of Effective Communication; English Language Teaching: A Modern Approach; and Making You Placement Ready. Harleen Kaur, Assistant Professor at Raj Kumar Goel Institute of Technology (Ghaziabad), has 14 years of experience as Editor, Facilitator, Mentor, Consultant and Teacher.
