Köllings Hölderlin-Essay verortet den Schlüssel zum Gesamtwerk des Dichters in dem berühmten Gedicht Hälfte des Lebens. Mit dem Bruch, den dieses Gedicht markiert, konnte Hölderlin sich nicht länger als Dichter-Priester, als Verkünder des Göttlichen oder Heiligen empfinden. Stattdessen wurde er zum Wanderer, zum Eingeweihten der Landschaft. Dies blieb nicht ohne Folgen für den hymnischen Spätstil. Dieser nimmt seinen Anfang im Jahr 1800 in der Ode Heidelberg. Mit ihr wird Hölderlin zum Magischen Realisten, mit Klopstock als einzigem Vorläufer. Hölderlins Landschaft, der äu eren Form nach eine Auslegung der Heidelberg-Ode von Strophe zu Strophe, bettet den Ertrag der Lektüre zugleich auf die knappe Weise einer dichten Beschreibung in die Geschichte der Hölderlin-Philologie ein. Die Linie der Interpretationen Walter Benjamins, Peters Szondis und Theodor W. Adornos wird fortgesetzt. Der Begriff des Mythos, unter den man Hölderlins Spätwerk noch heute gerne stellt, wird als unzureichend erkannt. Stattdessen wird, worin die poetischen, theologischen, philosophischen und politisch-revolutionären Dimensionen von Hölderlins Werk zusammenflie en, unter einen Satz von Hugo Ball gestellt: Wo kein Sakrament existiert, ist keine Empörung möglich. Ein Epilog über die Hölderlin-Lektüre Carl Schmitts beschlie t den Essay, der im Medium der Hölderlin-Auslegung eine eigene Poetologie formuliert.
