Se presenta un estudio sobre el desarrollo de las alegor�as que hacen alusi�n de manera m�s o menos directa a la entidad territorial de la Nueva Granada, desde las de car�cter her�ldico a las de quienes contribuyeron a la configuraci�n del territorio, extendi�ndose entre la �poca de la conquista espa�ola hasta 1830, momento en el que se disuelve la Rep�blica de Colombia y se produce la muerte de Bol�var. Este l�mite a veces se ha sobrepasado por el especial significado de alg�n tema, tanto en la �poca independentista como en la prehisp�nica. Por tanto, la obra se ha dividido en dos grandes bloques, correspondientes al periodo hisp�nico y al de la lucha por la independencia, incluyendo el estudio de aquellos s�mbolos que, de alguna manera, sin ser personificaciones, se convirtieron en alegor�as del espacio neogranadino o de sus partes, como es evidente en el caso de la ciudad de Cartagena de Indias.

Jesús Paniagua Pérez es licenciado en Historia de América en la Universidad de Sevilla (1978), doctorado en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1987) y catedrático emérito de Historia de América en la Universidad de León.

Camilo Andrés Moreno Bogoya ejerce como bibliotecario de la Academia Colombiana de Historia y Archivero de la catedral de Bogotá. Ha investigado sobre fuentes de archivo, historia eclesiástica, coleccionismo y fotografía histórica.
