There is an erroneous belief about Judaism before the holocaust: Jews across the world are thought to have been prepared to submit to their fate while also being only obscurely aware of their Jewish identity because they were, first and foremost, concerned with proving their nationalism. This was not the case at all.
In order to demonstrate this, Simon Epstein chose the year 1930, three years before Hitler took power, to establish a global view of Judaism, country by country. Basing his work on community archives and on newspapers published in Yiddish and in the languages of key countries, Simon Epstein shows that in 1930 Jews clearly reconciled their Jewish identity with their citizenship. He also shows all the efforts that a wide range of communities and consistorial organisations made to help Jews, to warn them of danger, obtain grants for them, etc.
Why then the great rout in 1939? Simply because they didn't have the means to fight against the adversary of Nazi Germany, against a background in which the Western world was not in the least disposed to help them.
