The contents of Collected Essays from the Plum-Branch Studio are largely devoted to the study of the early manuscripts and editions of Dream of the Red Chamber, one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature. Topics include the ideological contradictions of the author Cao Xueqin, an apparent inconsistency in the text concerning the phrase "the end of winter" (dongdi), the depictions of food and drink in the novel, a study of the character Shi Xiangyun, and the afterword to the revised edition of A Ramble Through Dream of the Red Chamber.
