About The Book

The book is divided into two parts. The first part, Film History, includes the author's academic papers on both Chinese and foreign film history. It selects important intellectual currents, theoretical controversies, genre films, and classic films in Chinese film history as research subjects, penetrating the historical surface from various theoretical perspectives such as ideology and cultural studies to reveal the concealed yet decisive forces at work. At the same time, it takes "modernity" as a fundamental point of entry to guide the exploration of Chinese film history, raising questions and reflections, and pointing out the internal driving forces behind the continuous transformation of Chinese cinema and the trends that have emerged. The second part, Observations on the Current State of Film, collects comprehensive academic papers written and published by the author between 2012 and 2015 for the major project of the National Social Science Fund's Art Program, "A Feasibility Study on the Competitive Strategies of Chinese Films in Overseas Markets." This part not only focuses on the study of film as an art form but also examines the film ecology shaped by the interaction, negotiation, and contestation of multiple forces, including government administration, industrial practitioners, overseas and domestic audiences, and civil society organizations.
