Historia natural, civil y geográfica de las naciones situadas en las riveras del río Orinoco fue escrita por José Gumilla tras vivir en América donde se interesó por el estudio de la historia natural. Mientras, como miembro de la Compañía de Jesús, se enfrascaba en la evangelización.

El padre Gumilla fue un hombre de acción y un investigador acucioso de las ciencias naturales, de la medicina indígena, de la Geografía, la Economía y de los idiomas de los pobladores de la cuenca del Orinoco. Fundó varias poblaciones en los ríos Apure, Meta y en el propio Orinoco.

Sus notas y escritos sobre el río Orinoco sirvieron durante mucho tiempo, como necesaria referencia para todos los científicos interesados en la naturaleza de la zona intertropical, incluyendo, obviamente, a Alejandro de Humboldt y muchos otros viajeros del siglo XIX.

La primera diligencia de un perito Arquitecto, a quien un gran Señor encarga la fábrica de un magnífico Palacio, es formar en su mente la idea, y después, mediante las proporciones del compás y la regla, hacer visibles en un Plan las singulares maniobras que dibujó en su fantasía: diligencia precisa, pero no suficiente para todos; porque si bien el diestro en la facultad a la primera vista de aquel ceñido pitipié formará cabal concepto de la soberbia máquina que representa, al contrarío, para el no versado en ella es precisa larga explicación, para que comprenda el diseño.

A ese modo y por el mismo fin, en la fábrica (no magnífica, sino natural) de esta historia gravé en su frontispicio todo el terreno, sobre que a paso lento girará mi pluma, individuando variedad de curiosas noticias. Para que los que están en los términos de la Geometría, comprendan la situación y altura polar, así del Orinoco, como de sus vertientes y terrenos que fecundan, vasta la primera ojeada del Plan propuesto; pero como no escribo para solos los doctos, habré de acompañar al Orinoco, desde las vertientes que hoy están descubiertas, hasta que con inmenso caudal rinde al Océano su tributo, endulzando por muchas leguas sus amargas espumas.

About The Author

Joseph Gumilla (1686-1750). Espana. Gumilla nacio el 3 de mayo de 1686 en Carcer (Valencia), y a los diecinueve anos se integro en una expedicion de misioneros jesuitas que viajo al Nuevo Reino de Granada. Tras estudiar filosofia y teologia en la Universidad Javeriana de Bogota, Gumilla recorrio como misionero la region de los Llanos del Orinoco. Mas tarde se desempeno como rector del Colegio de Cartagena, como superior de la Orden (1724-1730), viceprovincial del Nuevo Reino y procurador ante Madrid y Roma (1738-1743). Sin embargo, decidio regresar a America y continuar su actividad en el Orinoco, donde paso los siete ultimos anos de su vida como ermitano.
