De la d�faite militaire fran�aise, nait l'institution particuli�re des chantiers de jeunesse. Pendant l'�t� 1940, ils sont cr��s pour tous les jeunes hommes de 20 ans r�sidant en zone Sud et ils fonctionnent jusqu'� l'�t� 1944 sur le territoire national et jusqu'en 1945 outre-Rhin o� ils existent depuis 1943. Les chantiers concerneront au total plus de 400 000 jeunes n�s entre 1920 et 1924.
L'objectif majeur est de remplacer le service militaire, d�sormais interdit, par une exp�rience diversifi�e associant �ducation � transmission des valeurs nationales, activit� laborieuse � vie de groupe. Tout cela dans des montagnes recul�es ou en pleine for�t. Beaucoup de r�gions ont �t� marqu�es par les chantiers: de l'Ain � la Corr�ze, sans oublier des villes telles que Lyon ou Clermont-Ferrand. Les acteurs Jacques Charron ou Yves Montand, les ministres Olivier Guichard ou Charles Hernu, des patrons comme Antoine Riboud ou des artistes tels que Jean-Pierre Rampal les ont connus et en ont parl� comme les associations d'anciens � vis�e corporatiste. D'innombrables familles fran�aises en conservent le souvenir.
Ce livre est la premi�re �tude exhaustive des chantiers de jeunesse, permise par des documents exceptionnels. L'id�e des chantiers est ancienne � travers ses racines scoutes et internationales, caract�ristiques des ann�es 1930.
