Sganarelle Or The Self-Deceived Husband is a play written by Jean Baptiste Poquelin, better known as Moliere. The play is a comedy and was first performed in 1660. The story follows the character of Sganarelle, a middle-aged man who has recently married a much younger woman named Martine. Sganarelle is deeply in love with his new wife and believes that she is equally devoted to him. However, Martine has other plans and is secretly in love with another man.As the play progresses, Sganarelle becomes increasingly paranoid and jealous, convinced that Martine is cheating on him. He enlists the help of a quack doctor who convinces him that the only way to cure his jealousy is to beat his wife. Martine, meanwhile, is trying to find a way to be with her true love and enlists the help of a clever servant named Gros-Rene. Together, they hatch a plan to trick Sganarelle into believing that he has been turned into a donkey.The play is a satire on the theme of jealousy and the absurdity of some of the remedies that were used to cure it in the 17th century. Moliere uses humor and wit to poke fun at the characters and their actions, while also highlighting the dangers of jealousy and the consequences of acting on it.
