The Dwelling-Place of Light is a novel written by Winston Churchill. The story is set in the early 1900s in a small town in the United States. The main character, John Hodder, is a young minister who is struggling to find his place in the world. He is sent to this town to take over a church that has been struggling financially and spiritually. As John begins to settle into his new role, he meets a variety of characters who challenge his beliefs and his faith. One of these characters is Kate Marcy, a beautiful and wealthy woman who is also struggling with her own demons. John and Kate form a complicated relationship that is both romantic and spiritual. As the story unfolds, John becomes increasingly disillusioned with the church and the role of religion in society. He begins to question his own beliefs and the beliefs of those around him. The novel explores themes of faith, love, and the search for meaning in life. The Dwelling-Place of Light is a thought-provoking and emotional novel that delves into the complexities of human relationships and the search for spiritual fulfillment. Churchill's writing is vivid and engaging, drawing the reader into the world of the novel and the minds of its characters.1917. In this modern industrial civilization of which we are sometimes wont to boast, a certain glacier-like process may be observed. The bewildered, the helpless, and there are many, are torn from the parent rock, crushed, rolled smooth, and left stranded in strange places. Thus was Edward Bumpus severed and rolled from the ancestral ledge, from the firm granite of seemingly stable and lasting things, into shifting shale; surrounded by fragments of cliffs from distant lands he had never seen. Thus, at five and fifty, he found himself gatekeeper of the leviathan Chippering Mill in the City of Hampton.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
