About The Book

The Mill on the Floss is a novel written by George Eliot and published in 1860. The story is set in the fictional town of St. Ogg's, situated in the English Midlands, during the early 19th century. It follows the life of Maggie Tulliver, a young girl who is intelligent and passionate, but also rebellious and impulsive. Maggie grows up in a mill on the River Floss with her brother Tom and their parents. She is close to her brother, but their relationship becomes strained as they grow older and Maggie becomes more independent.As Maggie navigates her way through life, she faces many challenges, including conflicts with her family, societal expectations, and her own desires. She falls in love with a man named Philip Wakem, who is the son of a family that her own family has a long-standing feud with. Maggie's relationship with Philip causes tension between her and her brother, and ultimately leads to tragic consequences.The Mill on the Floss is a complex and nuanced exploration of family, love, and societal expectations. It is a powerful portrayal of the struggles and conflicts that arise when individuals try to find their place in the world while also trying to stay true to themselves.
