The Story of South Africa is a historical account of the Cape Colony, Natal, Orange Free State, South African Republic, and all other territories south of the Zambesi River. Written by George McCall Theal in 1894, the book covers the period from the earliest European settlement in South Africa to the aftermath of the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. The book begins with the arrival of the Dutch East India Company in the mid-17th century and the establishment of Cape Town as a trading post. It then traces the growth of the Cape Colony and the conflicts between the Dutch settlers and the British, culminating in the British annexation of the Cape in 1806. Theal also covers the history of the Boers, or Afrikaners, who migrated northward from the Cape in the early 19th century and established their own republics, including the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State. Theal describes the conflicts between the Boers and the indigenous African tribes, as well as the tensions between the Boers and the British, which led to the First Boer War in 1880-81.The book also includes a detailed account of the discovery of gold and diamonds in South Africa in the late 19th century, which led to a rush of European settlers and the formation of new colonies and territories.
