The Two Surplices: A Tale is a novel written by Ada Cambridge and published in 1865. The story takes place in a small English village where the church is the center of the community. The novel follows the lives of two young men, David and James, who are both training to become priests. They are both given surplices, which are traditional garments worn during religious ceremonies. However, one of the surplices is much finer and more expensive than the other.As the story progresses, David and James become rivals for the affections of the same woman, Mary. The competition between the two men becomes more intense when they discover that the surplices they were given were meant to be used for different occasions. David is given the finer surplice to wear during important ceremonies, while James is given the simpler one to wear during less important events.The rivalry between the two men comes to a head during a Christmas service when David wears the finer surplice despite it being James' turn to wear it. This causes a scandal in the village, and the two men are forced to confront their feelings for each other and for Mary.The Two Surplices: A Tale is a novel about love, rivalry, and the role of tradition in a changing society.
