About The Book

Twenty-Four Chapters on Mei Lanfang is the result of author Xu Chengbei's fifteen years of accumulated personal reflections on Mei Lanfang. The book selects fragments from Mei's life - such as his visit to the United States in the 1930s, where his performances captivated countless Hollywood actors and exerted a positive influence on the development of American film art; and his visit to the former Soviet Union, which directly contributed to the formation of Bertolt Brecht's system of performance theory. The subtleties of the Mei School lie in two qualities: conveying nobility whether in wealth or in poverty, and embodying stillness within movement - not only in vocal style but also in physical presentation. Particularly in aspects such as enunciation, facial expression and bearing, and finger techniques, the style may appear easy to learn yet difficult to capture in its true essence, requiring both the radiance of spring sunshine and a heart as calm as still water.
