Das nunmehr in fünfter Auflage vorliegende Standardwerk für Ingenieure in der Praxis und für Studierende der Ingenieurwissenschaften hat sich als geeignetes Lehrbuch zur Einführung in die Methode der finiten Elemente und Vertiefung des Wissens erwiesen. Das Werk liefert das notwendige Fachwissen für Ingenieure in der Industrie und erleichtert damit das Verständnis für strukturmechanische Aufgaben.
Die Einführung behandelt Probleme der linearen Statik, Dynamik und Stabilität bei Scheiben, Platten und Stabwerken, die mit erprobten Lernprogrammen auch selbst nachvollzogen werden können. Ergänzt werden diese linearen Verfahrensweisen durch eine Einführung in nichtlineare Berechnungsmethoden. Erstmals wird in einem Kapitel dargestellt, wie Spannungen auf Elementrändern bei Erfüllung der Gleichgewichtsbedingungen ("Methode der äquilibrierten Spannungen") ermittelt werden können.
Die Autoren versetzen den Leser in die Lage die Ergebnisse von Simulationsrechnungen kritisch zu beurteilen, Kernaufgaben des Berechnungsingenieurs. Der Frage systematischer Kontrollen wird daher in dieser Einführung besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt.
Das Buch will keine Patentlösungen vermitteln sondern den Leser in die Lage versetzen, seine Fähigkeiten selbst weiter zu entwickeln und zu überprüfen. Hierfür sind über 100 Übungsaufgaben mit Lösungen angegeben.
Professor Klaus Knothe, 1937 in Breslau geboren, studierte von 1956 bis 1963 an den Technischen Hochschulen in München und Darmstadt Bauingenieurwesen und Mathematik. Er war anschließend Assistent und Oberassistent für Mechanik und Konstruktionsberechnung bei Prof. Giencke an der TU Berlin. In der Promotion im Jahr 1967 befasste er sich mit dem Thema "Plattenberechnung nach dem Kraftgrößenverfahren". 1971 Habilitation zum Thema "Vergleichende Darstellung verschiedener Verfahren zur Berechnung der Eigenschwingungen von Rahmentragwerken". Klaus Knothe war anschließend, bis zu seinem Ruhestand, als Professor zunächst in der Fakultät Maschinenbau, später im Fachbereich Verkehrswesen und Angewandte Mechanik an der TU Berlin tätig.
Dipl.-Ing. Heribert Wessels, geb. 1953, studierte von 1975 bis 1983 Bauingenieurswesen an der TU Berlin. Von 1983 bis 1988 war er am Institut für Luft- und Raumfahrt der TU Berlin als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter beschäftigt. Der Arbeitsschwerpunkt lag auf Finite-Elemente-Methoden und Flächentragwerkslehre.
