La caratteristica pi� riconoscibile dei granchi pom-pom sono le loro chele modificate, ognuna delle quali solitamente trattiene un piccolo anemone di mare. Queste chele non sono armi ingrandite nel senso tradizionale del termine. Piuttosto, funzionano come strumenti adattativi che consentono al granchio di trasportare, manipolare e posizionare i suoi anemoni con precisione. La struttura delle chele riflette questa funzione, privilegiando la destrezza rispetto alla forza di frantumazione.
Gli anemoni non sono semplici elementi decorativi, bens� parte integrante della strategia di sopravvivenza del granchio. I granchi pompon non producono veleno n� sostanze chimiche repellenti. Si affidano invece alle cellule urticanti dei loro anemoni come forma di difesa mobile. Quando minacciati, il granchio solleva le chele, esponendo gli anemoni verso la presunta minaccia. Questo comportamento scoraggia molti predatori che altrimenti si ciberebbero di un granchio di queste dimensioni.
Il rapporto tra il granchio e l'anemone � simbiotico, ma non passivo. I granchi pompon si prendono cura attivamente dei loro anemoni. Se un anemone viene danneggiato, perso o diviso, il granchio pu� ridistribuire il tessuto tra le chele, propagando di fatto l'anemone. Ci� indica un livello di adattamento comportamentale che va oltre la semplice associazione. L'anatomia del granchio supporta questo comportamento attraverso un fine controllo motorio e un feedback sensoriale nelle chele.
Oltre alle chele, il resto del corpo del granchio pom-pom riflette il suo stile di vita. Il carapace � compatto e arrotondato, riducendo il rischio di impigliarsi in spazi ristretti. Le zampe sono proporzionate per un movimento controllato piuttosto che per la velocit�, consentendo al granchio di muoversi su superfici complesse senza dare nell'occhio. La parte inferiore del corpo � protetta ma flessibile, supportando sia il movimento che la muta.
Gli organi sensoriali, tra cui antenne e occhi composti, sono adattati ad ambienti con scarsa illuminazione. I granchi pom-pom si affidano meno alla dominanza visiva e pi� alla percezione della prossimit�.
