Der Begriff "Geburtshilfe" umschlieBt zunachst jede Art von Beistand bei dem Geburts- vorgang, der beim Menschen seit Aufnahme des aufrechten Ganges und als Folge der starkeren Entwicklung des Hirnschadels gegeniiber allen iibrigen Saugetieren mit mancherlei Schwierigkeiten und Gefahren verbunden ist. Geburtshilfe in diesem Sinne ist so alt wie das Menschengeschlecht, wenn auch die Geschichte uns lehrt, daB an Stelle rationeller MaBnahmen vielfach durch krassen Aberglauben und mystische Vorstellungen bestimmte Handlungen die ganze Hilfe ausmachten. Wir wollen aus zwingenden Grunden der Raumbeschrankung darauf verzichten, einen oberflachlichen geschichtlichen AbriB zu geben, da unseres Erachtens eine Geschichte der Geburtshilfe erst dann Gewinn bringt, wenn gerade auf die Einzelheiten eingegangen werden kann. Wir verweisen dazu auf die einschlagige historische Literatur, vor allem auf die Darstellung von J. FISCHER im HALBAN-SEITzschen Handbuch. Einige besonders markante geschichtliche Daten werden wir noch in den einzelnen Kapiteln, vor aHem in der Lehre von den geburtshilflichen Operationen einfugen. Es liegt auf der Hand, daB eine rationelle Geburtshilfe erst dann entstehen konnte, als im Laufe der Jahrhunderte allmahlich klarere Vorstellungen iiber den Geburts- vorgang unter normalen und pathologischen Verhaltnissen gewonnen wurden. Er- weiterte sich schon dadurch der Begriff der Geburtshilfe zu einer Lehre von dem gesamten Geburtsvorgang und seinen Storungen, so war von da natiirlich nur ein Schritt, auch die Biologie und Bio-Pathologie der Schwangerschaft und des Wochenbetts, schlieBlich auch des Neugeborenen in die Lehre von der Geburtshilfe einzubeziehen.
