La tonalit� verde non � puramente estetica; funge da mimetismo tra le rocce ricoperte di alghe e le formazioni coralline. L'intensit� del colore varia a seconda della dieta, del ciclo di muta e delle condizioni ambientali, spaziando dal verde pallido alle tonalit� verde smeraldo intenso con screziature pi� chiare.
Il carapace � tipicamente pi� largo che lungo, fornendo stabilit� e leva durante la navigazione su superfici rocciose verticali. Le dimensioni degli adulti variano generalmente dai 3 ai 5 centimetri di larghezza del carapace, sebbene l'apertura degli artigli possa far apparire gli individui pi� grandi. Il dimorfismo sessuale � sottile ma presente, in particolare nella struttura addominale e nello spessore degli artigli, aspetto che diventer� rilevante nei capitoli successivi sulla riproduzione.

Nonostante siano privi di quella che gli esseri umani tradizionalmente definiscono intelligenza, i granchi smeraldo dimostrano comportamenti decisionali complessi. Sono in grado di valutare il rischio, ricordare la posizione dei rifugi e modificare i percorsi di foraggiamento in base alla disponibilit� di cibo. Osservazioni ripetute mostrano che i granchi smeraldo imparano quali aree di un acquario forniscono costantemente cibo e danno la priorit� a queste zone, evitando quelle associate ad aggressivit� o disturbo.
La loro intelligenza � pi� comprensibile come intelligenza ecologica che come intelligenza cognitiva. Rispondono al feedback ambientale con efficienza, non con curiosit�. Ad esempio, un granchio smeraldo che subisce aggressioni mentre si nutre in una zona esposta modificher� il suo comportamento nutrendosi pi� tardi o scegliendo zone di alimentazione pi� riparate. Questa capacit� di adattamento � un meccanismo di sopravvivenza profondamente radicato nella loro biologia.
Dal punto di vista sociale, i granchi smeraldo non sono n� veramente solitari n� genuinamente sociali.
