A Study of Western Yugur Folk Songs is Professor Du Yaxiong's seminal work and representative masterpiece, as well as a work of great historical significance in the field of Chinese ethnomusicology. In this work, he conducted groundbreaking research on the folk songs of the Yugur people. In 1981, the preliminary draft was published in the inaugural issue of Gansu Ethnic Studies and subsequently received widespread attention from scholars both in China and abroad. The study won the Silver Prize of the inaugural Golden Bell Award for Music Theory from the Chinese Musicians Association. Newspapers and journals in the United States, Japan, Canada, Hungary, Argentina, and other countries published reports on it. The work has had a far-reaching influence and established the author's academic position in the study of ethnic and folk music. Beginning in 1964, the author spent more than fifty years continuously tracking and researching the folk songs of the Western Yugur. During this period, he not only learned the Western Yugur language but also transcribed more than two hundred folk songs. He demonstrated that Western Yugur folk songs preserve the characteristics of ancient Turkic and Uighur folk songs, and compared the kinship relationship between Yugur folk songs and Hungarian folk songs. In the past two years, he has further enriched the original work with new research findings and materials, all of which are now compiled and published together in this volume. The book is divided into two parts. The first part undertakes an extensive and in-depth exploration of Yugur and Hungarian folk songs from five perspectives: the value of folk songs, lyrical characteristics, origins and development, musical features, and comparative research. The second part presents newly collected and organized materials and research results on Yugur folk songs. The book's research perspective is unique, and it holds significant academic value. Approaching the subject from both philological and linguistic angles, it possesses a distinctive research perspective and stands as one of the classic works in Chinese ethnomusicology. It is of great reference value to scholars in musicology, ethnology, and folklore studies, and is also highly suitable for students learning and researching ethnic music.
