About The Book

This manuscript is a monograph on the Xia School Suona. The Xia School Suona is recognized as a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage of Anhui Province. It originated in northern Jiangsu and has been widely popular in the border regions of Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan, and Anhui, with the greatest prevalence in cities and counties such as Huaibei, Suzhou, Yongcheng, and Xuzhou. The manuscript has been compiled and researched by Zhou Zhimin, a provincial-level inheritor of the Xia School Suona, and Li Junmin, director of the Suixi County Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center. It discusses the natural environment, cultural background, historical evolution, and development of the Xia School Suona, with a focus on analyzing its artistic characteristics. The manuscript also includes over 200 pieces: folk-transmitted musical scores, the "Ka" technique formulas of Xia School Suona, and newly composed suona pieces.
