Walter Werbeck, bis 2017 Professor für Musikwissenschaft an der Universität Greifswald, ist Herausgeber der Neuen Schütz-Ausgabe und Mitherausgeber des Schütz-Jahrbuchs. Zu seinen Forschungsschwerpunkten gehört neben der Musikgeschichte des 17. Jahrhunderts auch diejenige des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts; das von ihm 2014 herausgegebene »Richard Strauss-Handbuch« wurde von der Zeitschrift »Opernwelt« zum Buch des Jahres gewählt.
