Primary defensive quills are thick, sharply pointed, and can reach up to 30 cm in length.
Crest quills, located along the neck and upper back, are elongated and can be raised to create an imposing, fan-like display.
Rattle quills on the tail are hollow and produce a loud warning sound when shaken.

Their sturdy limbs and curved claws are designed for digging burrows and excavating roots. Despite their heavy appearance, they move with surprising speed when threatened.
Indian Crested Porcupines are highly nocturnal, emerging from their burrows shortly after sunset and remaining active until the early morning hours. Their nighttime routines follow predictable patterns: initial alert scanning near the burrow entrance, followed by cautious movement into foraging zones.
Once outside, they travel along established routes, often using the same paths for weeks or months. These trails allow them efficient access to feeding areas such as root-rich soils, fruiting shrubs, or agricultural fields. Their movement is deliberate and steady, with frequent pauses to sniff and listen for threats.
Their burrow systems are an essential part of their daily behavior. They dig or enlarge complex tunnels with multiple chambers, providing:

Emergency exits for escape
Temperature stability during extreme heat
