INTRODUCTION TO THE SELKIRK REX
Origins, breed discovery, and what makes this curly-coated cat unique
The story of the Selkirk Rex begins not as a carefully planned creation, but as a rare and almost magical accident of nature. Unlike many cat breeds that were shaped over decades through intentional selective breeding, the Selkirk Rex owes its existence to a spontaneous genetic mutation that produced something strikingly different from anything people had seen before. This difference was not subtle. It was visible at first glance-a soft, plush coat of curls that seemed more like sheep's wool than typical cat fur. That one unusual kitten would go on to influence an entirely new breed, admired for both its distinctive appearance and its calm, affectionate personality.
The origin of the Selkirk Rex can be traced back to the late 1980s in Montana, United States. In a small animal shelter, a litter of kittens was born to an ordinary domestic cat. Among them was a single kitten with an extraordinary coat-thick, curly, and completely unlike her siblings. This kitten, later named Miss DePesto, caught the attention of a local breeder who recognized that this was not just a minor variation, but a potentially significant genetic trait. What made this discovery even more remarkable was that the curl gene in this kitten was dominant, unlike other curly-coated breeds such as the Devon Rex or Cornish Rex, where the gene is recessive. This meant that even when bred with straight-coated cats, the curly trait could still be passed down to offspring, making it easier to establish a stable line.
As breeders began working with this unique genetic trait, they carefully crossed the original curly-coated cat with breeds like Persians, British Shorthairs, and Exotic Shorthairs. This deliberate pairing helped to develop not only the signature coat but also the sturdy body type and gentle temperament that define the Selkirk Rex today. Over time, the breed gained recognition from major cat associations, and what began as a single curious mutation evolved into a beloved and distinct breed admired around the world.
One of the most defining features of the Selkirk Rex is, of course, its coat. The curls are not just limited to the body but extend to the whiskers, eyebrows, and even the tail. Each hair strand bends and twists in a way that creates a plush, almost cloud-like texture. Unlike the sleek, tight curls of other Rex breeds, the Selkirk Rex has a looser, more natural wave that gives it a soft and slightly tousled appearance. Some people describe it as looking permanently windswept, while others compare it to a stuffed toy come to life. The coat can be either short or long, and both varieties carry the same charmingly disheveled elegance.
However, the uniqueness of the Selkirk Rex goes far beyond its physical appearance. What truly sets this breed apart is the balance it strikes between playfulness and calmness. Many cat breeds tend to lean strongly in one direction-either highly energetic and demanding or quiet and independent. The Selkirk Rex occupies a comfortable middle ground. It is affectionate without being clingy, playful without being overwhelming, and social without being intrusive. This makes it particularly appealing to people who want a companion that adapts easily to different lifestyles.
From the very beginning, breeders noticed that these cats had a remarkably gentle and tolerant nature. They are often described as patient, which makes them well-suited for homes with children or other pets. Rather than reacting quickly or aggressively, they tend to observe and respond calmly, which reflects a deeper emotional stability. This temperament is likely influenced by the breeds used in their development, particularly the Persian and British Shorthair, both known for their relaxed and easygoing personalities.
