Echoes in Hearth, Woods and Hills: A Japanese Artist's Intimate Chronicle from the Lake District
This bilingual picture book marks the debut work by Japanese visual artist Hideyuki Sobue, completed as a profound homage to Beatrix Potter, whose spirit continues to shape the English Lake District.
Just as Potter's 23 tales and characters were born from her daily observations, Sobue drew deep inspiration from the small creatures―including his own companion animals―encountered in his Lake District life, culminating in 24 evocative animal portraits.
These portraits are transformed into a quiet, narrative dialogue, where the animals' soliloquies weave a unique story. The book appeals to children by nurturing a curiosity for nature, while offering adults a sophisticated "picture book for grownups." It subtly and humorously tackles contemporary themes such as ecology, politics, and gender, inviting profound reflection on humanity's relationship with the natural world.

湖水地方に暮らす日本人美術家が綴る：窓辺と森と丘をめぐる動物たちのおはなし
本作は、英国湖水地方在住の日本人美術家ソブエヒデユキが、ビアトリクス・ポターへの深いオマージュとして完成させた初のバイリンガル絵本です。
ポターが愛した湖水地方での日常から、彼女の全23話のおはなしと愛らしいキャラクターたちが生まれたように、ソブエもまた、自身の暮らしの中でひとときを共にした小動物たち（自身のペットたちも！）から深いインスピレーションを得て、計24点の動物肖像画を制作しました。この絵本は、その肖像画に命を吹き込み、動物たちの「独り言」でおはなしを綴っています。
子どもたちには自然への好奇心を育むとともに、大人たちにはエコロジー、政治、ジェンダーなど様々なトピックをユーモラスに織り交ぜつつ、自然と人間の営みを深く省察する「大人の絵本」として楽しめる内容となっています。
ソブエの緻密なアートと、動物たちの静かなひとり言が、現代を生きる私たちに時に優しく時に辛辣に問いかけ、絵本という枠を超えて深い思索の時間を提供してくれるでしょう。
Sobue, Hideyuki: - A Japanese artist based in the Lake District, UK. A graduate of Osaka University of Arts and raised as an orphan in Aichi, Japan, Sobue cultivates a distinctive practice in painting and drawing. His original line hatching method―rooted in Florentine Renaissance Disegno, Eastern artistic traditions, and neurological insight―forms a nuanced visual language. Through this synthesis, Sobue explores the complexities of human experience, striving to bridge Eastern and Western sensibilities. To date, Sobue has received four grants from Arts Council England and has collaborated with various organisations, including the National Trust, the John Ruskin Foundation, Lancaster University, the Wordsworth Trust, Itami City Art Museum Kakimori Bunko, the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, and Rydal Mount, to realise his art projects. Sobue's works are currently held in public and private collections in Japan, China, Britain, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, and the USA. This is his first-ever picture book. ｜ イギリス湖水地方を拠点に活動する日本人美術家。愛知県出身、大阪芸術大学卒（奨学生）。孤児として高校卒業まで養護施設で暮らす。絵画とドローイングにおいて独自の表現を追求し、フィレンツェ・ルネサンスのディセーニョ（素描）に根ざした線描法に、東洋の美意識と脳生理学的洞察を融合させた独創的なハッチング技法を確立。この総合的なアプローチを通じて、人間存在の神秘を探り、西洋と東洋、その長大な美術遺産と現代の知とを繋ぐ表現の可能性を探究している。これまでに英国芸術協議会より４度の助成を受け、ナショナル・トラストをはじめ、ジョン・ラスキン財団、ランカスター大学、ワーズワース・トラスト、公益財団法人柿衛文庫（市立伊丹ミュージアム）、大和日英基金、ライダル・マウントなど、様々な公的機関との協賛でプロジェクトを成功させてきた。現在、イギリス国内のパブリック・コレクション、および日本、イギリス、オランダ、カナダ、オーストラリア、アメリカ合衆国、中国にプライベート・コレクションがある。本作は、ソブエにとって初の絵本作品である。
