Vor bald 20 Jahren wurde ich von einem Zurcher Rontgenologen nach der Existenz und der funktionellen Bedeutung der Uncovertebralgelenke in der Halswirbelsaule gefragt. Ich muBte damals gestehen, daB ich keine nahere Kenntnis daruber hatte. Die Konsultation deutschsprachiger Bucher lieB mich im Stich, nirgends fand ich brauchbare Angaben. Erst im Lehrbuch von TESTUT, der unerschopflichen Quelle anatomischen Wissens, fand ich einige Bemerkungen und einen Hinweis auf das Werk des alten Anatomen H. LUSCHKA, "Die Halb- gelenke des menschlichen Korpers", erschienen in Berlin im Jahre 1858. Da mir auf Grund der Mitteilungen des Rontgenologen eine genaue Kenntnis der Verhaltnisse erwiinscht schien, habe ich damals angefangen, systematisch Hals- wirbelsaulen vom Erwachsenen und vom Kinde zu sammeln und sie rontgen- ologisch, makroskopisch und mikroskopisch-anatomisch zu untersuchen. LUSCHKA hatte sich vornehmlich mit den Verhaltnissen beim Erwachsenen beschaftigt. Nebenbei erwahnt er aber, daB er beim Neugeborenen an Stelle der Uncovertebral- gelenke nur lockeres Bindegewebe fand. Diese Bemerkung veranlaBte mich, auch fetales Material in die Untersuchung einzubeziehen. 1943 konnten die ersten Befunde in der Zeitschrift fur Anatomie und Entwicklungsgeschichte publiziert werden. Die Processus uncinati sind schaufelartige Erhebungen der oberen Wirbelkorperflachen; sie fehlen an der Unterflache und sind, wie Unter- suchungen an fetalen und kindlichen Halswirbeln zeigten, Teile des Wirbel- bogens. Diese Fortsatze, welche LUSCHKA als "Eminentiae costariae" bezeichnet hatte, verschmelzen erst gegen das 10. Lebensjahr mit dem Wirbelkorper kno- chern. Die Zwischenwirbclscheiben beschranken sich auf den Wirbelkorper- bereich. Weder beim Fetus noch beim Kinde konnte eine den Beschreibungen von LUSCHKA entsprechende Bildung gefunden werden.
