Die soziale Aufspaltung der Jugend ist kein neues Phänomen. Schon zu Be- ginn des Jahrhunderts unterschied man in der Jugendbewegung die "proleta- rische" von der "bürgerlichen" Jugend, und bis in die 80er Jahre blieb diese Aufspaltung auch für die Jugendforschung bestimmend!. Inzwischen sind neue soziale Aufspaltungen in den Vordergrund getreten, die nicht mehr dem traditionellen Modell sozialer Schichten folgen. Die Diskussion um die "Zwei-Drittel-Gesellschaft" rückte Benachteiligte am "sozialen Rand" in den Blickpunkt, die für sich keine soziale Schicht bilden. Auch die Unterschei- dung nach Geschlecht verweist auf eine neue Segmentierungslinie jenseits des Schichtrnodells. Ebenso können Ausländer der zweiten Generation als eigenes Segment betrachtet werden. Am deutlichsten dürfte aber die soziale Auf teilung in ostdeutsche und westdeutsche Jugendliche nach der deutschen Einheit auf neue soziale Differenzierungsprozesse verweisen. Die Tübinger Forschungsgruppe stellte die neue soziale Aufspaltung der Jugend in den Mittelpunkt ihrer Forschungsbemühungen und kam zu dem Ergebnis, da sich auch die politischen Orientierungen entsprechend diffe- renzieren. Im Mittelpunkt standen die jugendlichen Arbeitnehmerlnnen, die in ihrem inneren Differenzierungsproze untersucht werden. In einer west- deutschen und einer ostdeutschen Region wurden 1993 jeweils repräsentative Stichproben von jugendlichen Arbeitnehmerlnnen befragt und qualitative Interviews bzw. Gruppendiskussionen durchgeführt. Die Forschungsgruppe folgte dabei einer methodischen Konzeption, die Forschung mit politischer Bildung verbindet. Untersucht wurden in differenzierter Weise die politischen Orientierun- gen der Jugendlichen, es wurden Erklärungen, d. h. subjektive Begründungen dazu gesucht und Beziehungen zu den gesellschaftlichen Aufteilungsprozes- sen hergestellt. Die Ergebnisse werden in diesem Band vorgestellt.
