Der philosophische Text Das Buch der Wahrheit von Heinrich Seuse (1295-1366) gilt als ein geistesgeschichtliches Dokument ersten Ranges. Die Schrift, zur Verteidigung seines Lehrers Eckehart nach dessen Verurteilung von 1329 geschrieben, zeigt den philosophischen Ansatz Eckeharts zur Metaphysik und Anthropologie auf. Zugleich trägt Seuse in der Reflexion der zentralen Begriffe vernunftikeit (Denken) und gelassenheit seine philosophische Lehre über Gott, über die Welt, über den Sinn des menschlichen Lebens (d. h. seine Anthropologie) vor.
Heinrich Seuse wird 1295 in Konstanz geboren. Als Dreizehnjähriger tritt er in das dortige Dominikanerkloster ein. Überliefert ist ein mystisches Bekehrungserlebnis, nach dem er sich zeitlebens heftigsten Selbstkasteiungen unterworfen haben soll. Seuse studiert in Konstanz, Straßburg und in Köln, wo er bei Meister Eckart hört. Um 1326 kehrt er nach Konstanz zurück, um dort als Lektor zu wirken. Um diese Zeit entsteht das Buch der Wahrheit, in dem Seuse die Mystik Eckharts gegen dessen Gegner verteidigt und scharf gegen die "Brüder des freien Geistes" Stellung nimmt. Die Schrift zeigt den philosophischen Ansatz Eckharts zur Metaphysik und Anthropologie auf. Zugleich trägt Seuse in der Reflexion der zentralen Begriffe "vernunftikeit" (Denken) und "gelassenheit" seine philosophische Lehre über Gott, die Welt und den Sinn des menschlichen Lebens vor. Einen Großteil seiner Arbeit widmet er der seelsorglichen Betreuung von Klostergemeinschaften. Lektor und Prior geworden, muß er Konstanz 1338 wegen seiner Parteinahme im Investiturstreit verlassen. Den unermüdlichen, um Seelsorge bemühten Wanderprediger in oberdeutschen Nonnenklöstern verfolgen Krankheiten, falsche Anklagen und Verleumdungen, die ihn schließlich vor ein Inquisitionsgericht bringen. Obwohl er sich der kirchlichen Autorität unterwirft, wird er von seinen Gegnern weiterhin verfolgt. So wird Seuse schließlich von seinen Ordensoberen 1348 nach Ulm versetzt. Hier findet er endlich Ruhe für die Zusammenstellung seiner Briefe und Predigten. Er stirbt 1366 in Ulm.
