Der moderne Mensch ist ein Tier, in dessen Politik sein Leben als Lebewesen auf dem Spiel steht" (Foucault 1995: 171). Dieses Zitat des franz sischen Philosophen Michel Foucault verkehrt das bekannte Aristotelische Postulat vom Menschen als zoon politikon, als soziales, politisches Wesen zur Erreichung des gr tm glichen Gl cks, in sein Gegenteil und stellt die Politik als absolute Lebensnotwendigkeit in den Mittelpunkt des menschlichen Daseins. Foucault kommt zu diesem Schluss, weil "das Leben relativ beherrschbar geworden ist und die Optimierung dieser Beherrschung des Lebens zum Gegenstand der Politik geworden ist" (Heidenreich 2005: 113). Dies ist das Resultat seiner Forschungs- und Lehrt tigkeit in den letzten Jahren seines Lebens, also den sp ten 1970er Jahren. Zentral war hier die Definition der verschiedenen Spielarten der Macht. Foucault zeigte, dass aus der bis zur fr hen Neuzeit typischen Souver nit tsmacht, realhistorisch und im Sinne Thomas Hobbes' Leviathans, die Disziplinarmacht, f r welche er auch den Begriff des Panoptismus verwandte, und sp ter die Bio-Macht, entstanden. Diese Konzepte, f r welche u.a. seine Werke " berwachen und Strafen", "Der Wille zum Wissen", sowie seine in Buchform unter dem Titel "In Verteidigung der Gesellschaft" herausgegebenen Vorlesungen am Coll ge de France 1975/76 exemplarisch stehen, sind Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit.
