Laozi, also known as the Daodejing, was written by Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period. Consisting of two parts - the Daojing (Classic of the Way) and the Dejing (Classic of Virtue) - and totaling eighty-one chapters, the work covers a wide range of fields, including philosophy, politics, governance, military affairs, religion, literature, and ethics.

《老子》，又称《道德经》，春秋时期老子所作。分为上下两篇，分别为《道经》和《德经》，共八十一章。内容涉及哲学、政治、管理、军事、宗教、文学、伦理等诸多领域。

Laozi, whose surname was Li and given name was Er, and who was also known by his courtesy name Dan, lived in the late Spring and Autumn Period. The exact years of his birth and death remain unknown. He was an ancient Chinese thinker, philosopher, literary figure, and historian, as well as the founder and main representative of the Daoist school of thought.

老子，姓李名耳，字聃。春秋末期人，生卒年不详。中国古代思想家、哲学家、文学家和史学家，道家学派创始人和主要代表人物。

Laozi, consisting of about five thousand characters and divided into eighty-one chapters, is mostly written in rhymed prose. It is separated into two parts - the Daojing (Classic of the Way) and the Dejing (Classic of Virtue) - hence its alternative title, the Daodejing. Standing side by side with the Zhuangzi like twin peaks, it is a representative work of the pre-Qin Daoist school. The text focuses on a detailed exposition of the Heavenly Way (Tian Dao) as the ontological reality of the universe, the source of all things, and the principle governing all movement. It then uses this Heavenly Way to reflect on the human way, offering guidance on state governance and personal cultivation. Its scope covers all aspects of the universe, nature, society, and human life, constructing a unique theoretical system through simple dialectical thinking. This edition takes the traditionally transmitted Wang Bi's Laozi Daodejing Annotation (from the Zhuzi Jicheng [Collectanea of Masters], Zhonghua Book Company edition) as its primary source, cross-checked against the bamboo-slip and silk manuscript versions. It extensively incorporates and cites significant research findings from both ancient scholars and modern experts, providing annotations and a modern Chinese translation for the reader's reference.

《老子》五千言，共八十一章，多为韵文，分道经和德经两部分，所以又称《道德经》。与《庄子》如双峰并峙，是先秦道家学派的代表性著作。重在详尽论述作为宇宙本体、万物之源和运动规律的天道，并以之关照人道，指导治国和修身，涉及宇宙、自然、社会、人生的各个方面，用朴素的辩证思维构建起独特的理论体系。本次以传世的王弼《老子道德经注》（中华书局版《诸子集成》）为底本，校以竹简本、帛书本，广泛吸收、引用前贤及今人之重要研究成果，进行注释、翻译，以供读者参考。
