ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

An essential work to understand the thought and legacy of John Rawls, one of the most important political philosophers of the twentieth century.

Imagine you are designing a society. You don't know who you'll be in it: rich or poor, man or woman, gay or straight. What kind of society would you want?

John Rawls, the most influential political philosopher of the twentieth century, proposed this revolutionary thought experiment. Today, in Libres e Iguales, economist and philosopher Daniel Chandler offers a stimulating and ambitious intervention, inviting us to rediscover Rawls in order to find a way out of the growing crises devastating our world.

Building on Rawls's humane and egalitarian liberalism, Chandler presents a detailed and compelling argument for a progressive agenda that will fundamentally redefine and improve our world. He shows how we can protect freedom of expression and overcome culture wars, remove money from politics, and create an economy where everyone has the opportunity to reach their potential, where prosperity is widely shared, and where it operates within the limits of our finite planet.

Free and Equal overflows with hope and possibility: it is an encouraging alternative to the cynicism that permeates politics today, with the potential not only to transform contemporary debate but also to become a landmark for a modern, egalitarian liberalism. This work strengthens Rawls's place in political discourse and firmly establishes Chandler as a vital new voice for our time.
