Het is geen overdrijving te zeggen dat James Roolvink de beste 'close reader is van de laatste drie duizend jaar, want hij leest 'closer dan close' en weet teksten uit te leggen vanuit een begrip dat het begrip dat de te lezen tekst uitdrukt transcendeert. Juist door dit begrip kan hij woorden van duizenden jaren geleden vanuit zichzelf laten spreken, onbemiddeld door onze huidige tijdsgeest. Zijn uitleg van Aristoteles' 'De anima' (Over de ziel) is daar een voorbeeld van hoe je vanuit de transcendentie het verleden actueel kan maken, ondanks dat hij het Grieks niet machtig is. De 'sfeer' van betekenis is immers zelf transcendent en gaat woorden, die taal voorafgaan, vooraf. Met zijn lezing krijgt Aristoteles tekst wederopstanding.

De waarde van James' lezingen zijn daarom niet alleen dat hij de betekenis van een tekst kan weergeven, maar het gedachtengoed van de denker vanuit dat gedachtengoed zelf verder kan ontwikkelen. Hij bespreekt niet slechts Aristoteles werk, maar ontwikkelt het verder en wel omdat hij het werk serieus neemt en niet slechts als een historisch artefact beschouwt, iets primitiefs dat hoogstens pseudowetenschappelijk is, dat geen enkele waarheid kan onthullen. Een klein voorbeeld daarvan is hoe hij Aristoteles' leer van de transformatie van de elementen (vuur, lucht, water en aarde) verder ontwikkelt. Op die wijze kun je zelf spiritueel leren lezen met ziel.

Zijn boek 'Over de ziel' bevat een vertaling vanuit het Engels van het eerste boek van Aristoteles' 'De anima'. Dat eerste boek bevat vijf hoofdstukken. In de voetnoten vind je een uitleg van de tekst die de tekst (langzaam stap voor stap en secuur) op de voet volgt, zodat je gemakkelijk tijdens het lezen van een pagina op dezelfde pagina een uitleg vindt en niet door het boek hoeft te bladeren.

Het eerste hoofdstuk leert je allerlei vragen over de ziel te stellen, zodat de vraag naar wat het wezen van de ziel is �berhaupt helder, dat wil zeggen met begrip (voor wat er op het spel staat met het beantwoorden van de vraag), gesteld worden. Het tweede hoofdstuk kan de antwoorden vanuit de traditie, het verleden, vanuit de vraagstelling begrijpen, met als doel 'de krenten uit de pap te vissen'. Het derde hoofdstuk gaat over of de ziel om het lichaam te bewegen zelf in beweging moet zijn. Hoofdstuk vier verwerpt dat de ziel de harmonie van het lichaam is. Hoofdstuk vijf verwerpt de gedachte dat de ziel als kenner van de vier elementen (lucht, water, aarde en vuur) zelf uit die elementen moet bestaan vanuit het idee dat het gelijke het gelijke kent.

De vertaling wordt voorafgaan door een korte inleiding op 'De anima' en James' definitie van de ziel. Deze definitie is de achtergrond waartegen Aristoteles' idee van de ziel kan verschijnen en is tevens een kritiek en aanvulling op zijn idee van de ziel. Het boek wordt afgesloten met appendix over een empedoclosiaanse verklaring van het ontstaan van het witte bot en een appendix over hoe tijd ontstaat.
