Recorrer el Casco Antiguo, de la ciudad de Panamá, es transportarse a otro tiempo. Fundado en 1673, es una mezcla de diferentes estilos arquitectónicos que reflejan la diversidad cultural del país desde la época colonial y colombiana, con su respectiva influencia francesa y de las colonias no-hispánicas del Caribe, hasta la europea y estadounidense. Todo lo anterior combinado con muestras del neoclasicismo, neorrenacimiento y neocolonial; destacándose admirables representaciones que van desde el art nouveau al art déco. Igual de impresionante es el contraste que existe entre la extraordinaria belleza de las edificaciones históricas debidamente restauradas con aquellas en reconstrucción, abandono o prácticamente en ruinas.Su recuperación inició, hace unos 20 años, luego de la aprobación de los incentivos fiscales y económicos, mediante el Decreto Ley N 9 de agosto de 1997, que impulsaron la inversión inmobiliaria. Además de ampliar los límites del área del Conjunto Monumental Histórico, abarcando aquellas partes del arrabal que aun mostraban un paisaje arquitectónico y urbanístico coherente; en diciembre del mismo año, se logra su inclusión como bien cultural en la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad de la Unesco.De sus calles brota historia, cultura y arte. Para vivir su ambiente e impregnarse de su encanto, merece dedicarle varias horas recorriendo y apreciando sus plazas, casas, museos, tiendas, hoteles, heladerías, exposiciones de arte, bares y restaurantes. Se puede pasear a cualquier hora, tanto de día como de noche, aunque los fines de semana y días feriados incrementan los artistas, artesanos y actividades culturales. A diferencia de su antepasado, donde la clase privilegiada habitaba dentro de la gran muralla y el resto en el arrabal de la ciudad, actualmente es un hermoso crisol de razas. Asimismo, en un día caluroso, hay que disfrutar un raspao, elemento irresistible de la gastronomía popular que disfrutan residentes y visitantes indistintamente de su edad o clase social.Las imágenes de esta publicación fueron captadas durante el periodo comprendido entre junio de 2015 y agosto de 2016. La selección final de los 100 monumentos históricos se debió, primordialmente, al material bibliográfico disponible en medio digital. Luego de la triste e inesperada partida de Eduardo Tejeira Davis, cuyos escritos son referencia obligatoria para la conservación de nuestro patrimonio histórico y quien colaboró en mis iniciativas sobre el tema, tengo el honor de dedicarle esta obra.
