About The Book

With spectacular views across the River Dee, and surrounded by stunning countryside, Heswall has long been one of the Wirral Peninsula's most sought-after locations. First recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086, the townships of Heswall and Gayton grew rapidly from the late 1800s onwards as new railway and omnibus routes provided easy commuting links to Liverpool, and wealthy merchants chose to build grand mansions here. Hospitals and children's institutions were established to benefit from the fresh sea air, well removed from the increasing pollution of Liverpool. Using a selection of old and new photographs, local historians Jenny McRonald and Roger Lane capture images of many historical buildings that are now long lost, and show how Heswall has grown from a small village into the thriving community we know today. They reveal how fascinating glimpses of the past can still be seen among the more modern developments. This book is essential reading for all those who know and love Heswall.

About The Author

Lane, Roger: - Roger Lane developed a passionate interest in the local history of Heswall while researching the history of his house and its previous occupants. Trained as a PhD chemist, he enjoys applying his research skills in this completely different field of study. He leads the Local History Group of the Heswall Society. Jenny and Roger have written over 25 articles covering all aspects of the history of Heswall and have given many talks on the subject. Roger is an avid collector of old photographs and paintings of Heswall and uses these to illustrate his articles and talks.

McRonald, Jenny: - Jenny McRonald has always had an interest in the history of Heswall, where she has been a lifelong resident, and she taught local history studies in Heswall Primary School where she was a teacher for 37 years. She has written a history of the school up to the time it moved from its site on the Puddydale in 1982. She was Chairman of the Heswall Society 1996-2000.
