Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2014 im Fachbereich Kunst - Fotografie und Film, Note: 1,3, Universität Koblenz-Landau (Institut für Kulturwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Mit Bildern forschen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Vieles wurde über den Bildband Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts des deutschen Fotografen August Sander geschrieben. Laut dem Kunstkritiker John Berger habe "[k]ein anderer Photograph, der Porträtaufnahmen seiner eigenen Landsleute machte, [...] je auf so klare Weise dokumentarisch gearbeitet" (Berger 1981, 27). Ziel dieser Dokumentation sei es gewesen, "archetypische Repräsentanten für jeden möglichen Typus, jede soziale Klasse, jede Unterklasse, jede Beschäftigung, jede Berufung und jedes Privileg zu finden" (Berger 1981, 27). Auch Sanders Freund Alfred Döblin schrieb, über Sanders Fotografie "die Bilder sind im ganzen ein blendendes Material für die Kultur-, Klassen- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte" (Sander 1990, 14), sogar " eine Art Kulturgeschichte, besser Soziologie" (ebd. 13) der damaligen Zeit. Die Bilder stellen eine Typologie der Weimarer Gesellschaft dar (Baker 1996, 76). Sander selbst glaubte an die Objektivität seiner Bilder (ebd. 80). Demnach erheben sie einen Anspruch auf Repräsentation der damaligen Gesellschaft. Doch wie kann man eine ganze Gesellschaft in nur einer Arbeit repräsentieren? Um dieser Frage nachzugehen, werden in einem ersten Schritt Theorien der Fotografie erläutert. Diese dienen als Anleitung zur Bildanalyse. Grundlegend für die Bildanalyse sind das Essay Die helle Kammer des französischen Semiotikers Roland Barthes, sowie einige Gedanken des britischen Kunstkritikers John Berger, der sich sowohl mit der Theorie Roland Barthes' als auch mit Fotografien von August Sander auseinandersetzte. Nachdem mit Barthes und Berger ein theoretischer Rahmen zur Analyse gegeben ist, werden im zweiten Schritt dieser Arbeit Sanders Grundannahmen, Intentionen und Theorien erörtert und kontextualisiert.
