The summer of 2017 brought record-setting rain, heat, and humidity. Most days through Mid-August were a mix of clouds, sun, and brief intervals of heavy rainfall. This journal is about home ownership and gardening. This summer, one female deer crossing the driveway to reach a neighbor's apple tree resulted in damage to front lawn fencing. Ants entering the house was another problem but which was dealt with swiftly using RAID (7x stronger than other leading brands). Upon further inspection, I learned the ants were a clear and present danger to other areas close to the house and as well as in potted plants. More RAID. There are 85 trees, shrubs, stonecrops, strawberries, grapevines, one rose bush, and potted plants on my quarter-acre parcel of land. Nonetheless, the purpose of this journal is to engage and inspire other naturalists, gardeners, animal lovers, writers, and visual journalists.

Darlene Dranda is a visual journalist. In 1992, she earned a B.S. degree in education from The King's College now located in New York City. While working in wine retail she studied with the New Jersey Chapter of The Society of Wine Educators.
